Barbara Wittwer

(30 Mar 1810 - 8 Apr 1876)

From letters written by Ruby Holm:
My mother told me that her parents - Christian and Barbara Bride emigrated to America from Switzerland and settled in Sugar Creek Township, Stark County Ohio. I do not know the date. They had six children, the youngest being my other Mary Ann Bride. My grandfather died while quite young and left my grandmother with the children to raise. She worked very hard in the fields or did anything she could to provide a living. She spun her own flax and wove it into linen, made her own tallow candles and clothing, baked bread in outside brick ovens. She was true to the reputation of the Swiss doing fine needlework. My mother remembered that there was still an Indian chief living in the vicinity.

At the age twenty-nine he married Mary Ann Bride who was twenty-four. Her parents had sailed from Switzerland and settled in the vicinity of Sugar Creek (township). Shortly after settling there my grandfather died and left a family of six children, two boys and four girls. Elizabeth died from diphtheria at the age of twenty one. My grandmother raised the family by working in the fields like a man. She made candles (their only way of light) spun flax and wool for their clothing baked in an outdoor oven. They wore white caps so I think they were Mennonites.
