Individual Details

David Hughes

(1803 - 1848)

David Hughes came to Radnor TWP about 1838 and it is said he went back to Wales in 1840 to get his wife and 2 children and convincing many relatives and friends to come to Ohio. There was a large group (including his wife and children) that came on "The Oxford" sailing ship landing in New York on May 20, 1841. However, no David Hughes is listed on the Passenger list! There are several surname Hughes listed but none matching Davids birth year of 1803. Joe Preston

The following was written by Alice Walters (gg granddaughter of David and Mary) in 2016.
At this writing the earliest ancestor I have any record of is David Hughes 1807-1848. He came to America in 1838. History doesn't relate where he stayed when he arrived at Radnor, Ohio. The deeds on record in Delaware County Court House show that one Evan Hughes purchased 100 acres of land in 1835 located immediately north of what is now Radnor (on State Rt. 203). Since David Hughes arrived three years later in 1838 he could have stayed there and (Evan) was possibly a brother. In 1840 David Hughes returned to Wales and induced enough friends and relatives, including his wife and two children to come to America (1841). There were enough in the group to almost make a boat load (SEE Reference above). His (David's) wife was Mary Evans which will be described on another attached sheet.
David and Mary Evans Hughes had only the two children and were born in Wales.
1. Evan Hughes 1837-1908 (my maternal grandfather)
2. Mary Hughes Jones (1840-1930) married Wm L Jones and lived in Columbus, Ohio.
(Evan 1837-1908) When he was eleven years old his father died (1848). He then worked for a farmer for 6 months for $2.00 a month. When Evan was 14 his mother died. She was sick 18 montha. He took care of her and raised his sister Mary.
At the age of 22, March 12 1859 he married Sarah Kyle (1839-1874), the daughter of David and Margaret (Davis) Kyle. David Kyle died soon after this date. Evan and Sarah Kyle Hughes owned and operated the farm of Sarah's father. It was located 1/2 mile South of Hoskins Road on the East side of the river. All their children were born there.
In 1869 Evan and Sarah deeded their interest in the farm to Sarah's brother William Kyle. Evan and Sarah moved to 130 acre farm he purchased , located one half mile south of Richwood, mostly on the East side of St Rt 37. I am inclined to think that what attracted them to Richwood was that Sarah's mother had remarried to a Mr. Dilsaver of Richwood. Also a brother had located in that area.
Two years later in 1874 Evan sold this farm and bought 201 acres from Adam Dilsaver (his step father in law) in Prospect TWP and moved to it. This was on the North side of Boundry Road and both sides of Centerville Road which is the first road west of State Rt. 4. (now 2016 the home of Carl and Henrietta Jacobs.
Jan 9 1874 Sarah died and left him with 6 small children (ages from 2-13). He raised them without a mother and was a widower for 11 years. The children were as follows; Flora, Nellie, David, Catherine, Ora Lee, and Sallie.
In August of 1885 Evan remarried Nancy Jane Treese (1885-1908). She was the daughter of Henry Treese and Jane Cratty Treese. Their farm home was one mile north of the Evan Hughes farm. At the time of their marriage Nancy Jane was 32 and Evan was 47. The history of Henry Treese and Jane Cratty is on another sheet. While living on this farm four children were born but one died in infancy. Perry 1886, Mary 1887 (my mother), 3 Evan 1894.
My mother used to tell us about attending Michigan School located on the north boundary of this farm. She spoke of Alfred Jones being her teacher in the first grade, who in later years lived on a farm he owned 1/2 mile south of Larue on state rt 37.
