John Calvin Brown

John "Jack" had a turkey farm about 1930 (see Floyd Harris). Was a rural mail carrier from 1922-55. Had gas station that he gave to son, Leon, about 1937. Wore an eye patch since 1942 after losing his eye from a shotgun accident. Had 20 beebies in his head and scar on cheek the rest of his life (cheekbone torn out). He gave each child a lot 100'x180 in Hager City'. Helped Peg & George, Jack & Shirley in Brownie's restaurant. He always paid his bills immediately and his children do the same.

Jack graduated from Ellsworth HS, he and cousin Florence Connors were first in family to graduate. Florence later became a teacher and the first to have a college education. Jack was a member of the MN National Guard then the Rainbow Division, 151st Field Artillery in WWI, served 22 month active duty + Guard. First served in Texas, holding back Pancho Villa's forces. Then he went to France where he was gassed with mustard gas, hospitalized a couple of weeks. Fought in Battle of Belleau Woods, Chateau Thierry, Argonne Forest.
