Major General William Hoge graduated from West Point in 1916, and earned the Distinguished Service Cross in World War I, which was presented to him by General Perishing. Between wars he commanded the 14th Engineer Battalion, Philippine Scouts, that build roads and bridges on Bataan. In 1942, he headed the construction of the ALCAN Highway from British Columbia, Canada, to Alaska. He earned the Distinguished Service Medal for his role in the defense of St. Vith during the Battle of the Bulge. The 1969 movie "The Bridge at Remagen" was based on William's decision to send his troops across the bridge to take control of the bridge. Hoge earned the Oak Leaf Cluster for his audacity. The movie character General Shinner was based on Hoge, and played by E. G. Marshall in the film.
