John Newcomer was active politically. He served as sheriff of Washington County in 1836, a state senator 1840-1846, a county commissioner in 1846 and in 1859, and a delegate to the Maryland state constitutional convention in 1850.
He managed his farm in Washington County, operated a flour mill on Beaver Creek and established the flour and grain firm of Newcomer & Stonebraker in Baltimore.
