Upton Swingley

Upton Swingley went with his father, Nathaniel Swingley and some other men, to the gold fields of California in 1850. They travel overland through what became Omaha, Fort Laramie, Salt Lake City and Placerville, California. In November of 1853, they started for home, paying $400 for tickets on a ship. They sailed from San Francisco to the Panama Isthmus, where they walked across the isthmus. Their ship arrived in New York 28 days after they left San Francisco.
