Individual Details
Peter Newcomer Senior
(20 Jul 1752 - 4 Jan 1826)
Peter Newcomer is listed as one of three brothers, along with Christian and Henry Necomer, that first settled in Beaver Creek by the Washington County Historical Trust. For more information, please visit the article on the Scratch Ankle Farm at WashingtonCountyHistoricalTrust.org.
A Peter Newcomer was listed as moving from Washington County, Maryland to Tyron Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was a Mennonite. However, our Peter Newcomer had children born in Washington County, Maryland almost every year from 1783 to 1806, I suspect that the Peter Newcomer who moved to Tyron Township is a different Peter Newcomer.
Thomas Williams, page 200, has Peter Newcomer settling near Boonsboro or Benevola.
The Daughters of the American Revolution Patriot Index - Centennial Edition, Part 2, page 2137, listed Peter Newcomer (same two wives, but different birth--20 May 1758--and death--15 May 1836--dates) as rebel private during the Revolutionary War. Another source reported that Peter Newcomer served in the Pennsylvania militia from 1780 to 1781 as a private in the First Battalion, Cumberland County Militia, but more detailed research by Marie Jones found that Peter Newcomer to be a different Peter Newcomer.
Another source, on page 262 but cannot remember whose book, listed Peter as a private in the militia, 2nd class in Captain Conrad Hogmire's company (1776/1777). This source also listed Peter as a Reverend.
James Lehman's book listed Peter Newcomer as a "non-enroller and non-associator" by Captain Samuel Hughes on 29 April 1776. The Convention of the Province of Maryland allowed exemptions to militia service for pacifists during the Revolutionary War.
Daniel Lehman has Peter being fined in 1776, along with his brother, Christian, and father, Henry, for refusing to bear arms.
It seems that Peter Newcomer, Sr., may have been a minister, possibly a Mennonite or a Brethren, a soldier and not a soldier.
