Robert and Samuel Shafer, brothers, ran Shafer Brothers of Hagerstown, Maryland. It was a gentlemen's clothing and furnishings company. Robert began working at age 12 at the Hagerstown Canning Factory. Later, he became an errand boy for McCardell Brothers clothing store of Hagerstown, Maryland. Next, he work at Lowenstein Clothing Company. In 1899 he and his brother opened Shafer Brothers. Robert Shafer was a member of the Reformed Church.
