Josephus Ground

Josephus Ground became a clerk at William Knode's grocery store in Hagerstown, Maryland at the age of 16. Next, he went to Baltimore, Maryland and worked in the wholesale business. At age 19, Josephus went to California, sailing around Cape Horn. After one year at Mokalumne Hill in Calaveras County, California, he returned to Maryland via the Isthmus of Panama. Josephus was home in time to celebrate his 21st birthday.
Josephus Ground made his business as a general merchandiser in Leitersburg, Maryland from 1853 to, at least, 1898. He was a Democrat, and an unsuccessful candidate for the Maryland House of Delegates.
