Joseph Rice graduated from Northwestern University in 1893. He soon joined his cousin, John Rice, in opening the Citizens Bank of Mount Morris. He also served as an officer and director of Kable Brothers Company, which printed the book on Mount Morris.
Joseph Rice and Emily Newcomer had no children, but raised a foster child, Margaret.
