John Witmer Senior

John Witmer's mother was either Mary Miller or Fannie Musser.
He built a stone house in 1808 on his Beaver Creek, Maryland farm. At one time the farm included a flour mill, blacksmith shop and a distillery. The mill was torn down in 1915. John Witmer owned slaves who lived and worked on his estate.
John Witmer was a County Commissioner and a Director of the Hagerstown National Bank.
John Witmer served in the Hagerstown Cavalry under Captain Jacob Barr in the War of 1812. John was at the defeat at Bladesburg when General Ross was killed and the British Army went on to Washington and burned the captiol.
After his service, John Witmer was given land in Ogle County, Illinois for his military service.
