William was a member of the Zion Reformed Church and a past master of A.F.&A.M. Friendship Lodge in Hagerstown, Maryland. Also, he was past high priest, Ithiel Royal Arch Chapter; past captain general, St. Bernard Commandary of Knights Templar; a noble, Mystic Shrine, Boumi Temple; and more.
He served three terms on the school board.
