Barbara Hershey's death inspired a novel about the family's stuggles: "I Hear the Reaper's Song," by Sara Stambaugh. Barbara and her boy friend, Enos Barge, were returning from a party on a summer Saturday night when their buggy was hit by a train a railroad crossing.
