Helen Martha Hanna

Helen Hana's ancestors came to America in 1624. Originating in Scotland, they went to Ireland and then to Boston. Helen was born on the family farm four miles northwest of Milledgeville, Illinois.

Helen started teaching at Eureka Country School, northeast of Polo, Illinois, in 1941. There were only five pupils the first year. She was the only teacher and had to carry water, fix the fire in the stove and clean. The second year there were nine students. In the fall of 1943 she moved to Polo Elementary School in Polo, Illinois, where she taught sixth grade one year and then second grade for four and one half years. In 1948 she moved to Champaign, Illinois, with her husband, where she taught as a substitute in the
Champaign schools for the next two years. She stopped teaching to rear a family in 1950. She returned to teaching in January l968 as a third grade teacher in Summerdale School in Rockford, Illinois, where she remained until retirement in 1981.
