John Newcomer was born "John Melchor Newcomer," but when his brother was born, John's middle name was changed to Isaac, and Melchor became his brother's first name.
John lived in Mount Morris, Illinois, until 1930, when he moved to Pasadena, California. After one year in California, he moved back to Milledgeville, Illinois.
John attended elementary school in Milledgeville and graduated from Polo (Illinois) High School June 1942. The same month he enrolled in the University of Illinois at Champaign.
In December 1942, John enlisted in the Enlisted Reserve Corps (ERC) of the US Army, but was not called to active service until March 1943 at Camp Grant, Illinois. He served with the Ninth Army in Germany in 1945 and was a member of the Army of Occupation in Berlin, Germany. John was discharged from Army at Camp Grant (Rockford, Illinois) in March 1946.
John Newcomer returned to the University of Illinois, under the GI Bill, in 1946, and graduated in 1950.
From January 1950 to March 1986, when he retired, John worked as a mechanical engineer in Rockford, Illinois. He worked with W. F. & John Barnes Company, Burd Piston Ring Company, Hadees Heater Company, and Atwoood Vacuum Machine Company before going to Amerock Corporation in 1960. His first job at Amerock was designing the window sash balancer for Anderson windows.
