Samuel Isaac Newcomer

Samuel Newcomer joined the Church of the Brethren in 1879. He became a minister in 1888 and an elder in 1906. Samuel left Lanark, Illinois, for California in 1920.

Samuel I. Newcomer, a native born citizen of IL - Lincoln Twp., Ogle County, June 24, 1856 the date of his birth - is now identified with the commercial and agricultural interests of Carroll County as an enterprising merchant and business man of Lanark, and as a wide-awake, skilled farmer, successfully managing hif fine farm on section 18, Salem Township, where he has his residence. He is a son of Isaac and Elizabeth (Emmert) Newcomer, natives of Washington County, MD where they spent the early years of their married life. They subsequently came to IL and located in Lincoln Twp. Ogle County; that being in the spring of 1854. They still reside there and are greatly respected. They had a family of 13 children, seven sons and six daughter, our subject was the youngest.
He was reared in his native town, receiving the advantages of a good education, and he continued to reside there until the fall of 1880, when he purchased his present place of residence and actively set to work to still further improve the farm of 120 acres. He has its rich soil under admirable tillage and has erected a fine set of buildings. Besides devoting much of his time to agricultural he is interested in the mercantile business in Lanark, and is also engaged in quite an extent in buying and selling different kinds of property. Mr. Newcomer is a young man of unusual acumen, ability and foresight, of a keen, resolute nature, possessing prompt and systematic business habits, which have made him successful while he is yet in the vigor of early manhood. And his example is worthy of imitation by those just starting out. Our subject possesses in an eminent degree those pleasant social qualities and the stability of character that attaches to him warm and steadfast friends. Mr. Newcomer has been School Director for several years. In politics he is of the Republican party.
Dec. 18, 1878 he and Emma C. Phillips were married in Salem Twp. Mrs. Newcomer was born in Lincoln Twp. Ogle County Sept. 14, 1860 and is a daughter of Wm. & Mary (Miller) Phillips, residents of Lanark. They are the parents of four children - Maud O., born Sept. 19, 1879; Leroy W. born Nov. 22, 1882; Edna A born Feb. 19, 1886; Hope E. born July 27, 1888.
Mr. and Mrs. Newcomer are active members of the German Baptist Church of which he has been Deacon, and is now a Minister in the first degree. Mr. Newcomer united with that church in May, 1879 at Silver Creek, Ogle Co. IL being baptized by Elder David Price; and Mrs. Newcomer was baptized by Elder Moore in May 1882 uniting with the church at Lanark in Rock Creek Twp.
