[FGS and information provided by Karen Hawkinson in 1995]
In July of 1976, John married Karen Madsen in the Hall Methodist Church in Hall, Montana.
Karen was born in North Dakota but moved with her parents and sister in 1956 to a ranch near Hall where her father worked as a ranch hand until his death in 1979. She attended grade school in Hall, high school in Drummond, and the University of Montana in Missoula where she received her elementary education degree. She taught school in Lame Deer, Montana for two years; then she taught at Pine Grove School in rural Garfield county, Montana. At the end of that school year a good friend, Sue Stanton, introduced Karen to her cousin, John Hawkinson. A year later John and Karen were married.
Amy Joy Hawkinson was born on New Year's Day in 1977 in Conrad, Montana where
John worked for the Courtesy Ford dealership. The family soon returned to Circle where John worked at the Hawkinson Hardware store and Karen taught in the grade school. In 1979, the family again packed up and moved -- this time to Billings, Montana. John worked as the Assistant Sporting Goods manager at K-Mart while Karen kept Amy busy and growing. John was transferred to the
Miles City K-Mart store in 1981, so Amy spent her fourth birthday moving to a new home in Miles City. The family spent the next nine years in Miles City at various jobs and businesses.
In 1990 we decided that John would return to college. After looking over several schools we chose Montana Tech (the old Montana School of Mines) in Butte. The family moved there in July of '90 and John has been working toward a degree in Engineering Science since then. He expects to finish in December of '96. Karen has been supporting the family since then, working for the local
Insty Prints shop as a type-setter/graphics artist and John has been supplementing with part time and summer work-study jobs on campus along with some gun dealing. Amy graduated high school in June '95 and expects to join the Navy in January as a linguist/interpreter.
