Terry's father was Laurence Trudeau; he was adopted by Woody Hawkinson in 1952. Terry attended public schools in Circle, Montana and Hanson Mechanics in Fargo, N.D. for two years. He put in three years in the Army where he became a helicopter mechanic. He spent two years in Vietnam. Discharged at Ft. Lewis,Washington in July 1971 as a Buck Sarg. Terry was a 2 year letterman in football at CHS, and active in other sports.
