Individual Details
Martinus "Martin" Dewitt
(Abt 1729 - Aft 10 Oct 1799)
Would like more proof that Martin is a son of Paulus and Catherine DeWitt. I didn't find his baptismal record like some of their other children.
Notes:
Marriage of Martin's daughter, Sarah, to Frederick Rice (some spell it Royce) in 1787 Hampshire Co, VA shows that Martin was living in what is now W. VA. area. It is not known when Martin removed to KY. "Monongalia Story", A Bicentennial History - Prelude by Earl Parsons , W. VA., pg 197: "Acquella Martin is intitled to 400 acres ...Monongalia Co. on the Monongalia River...include settlement made 1771, Green Co, at Rice's landing (Lecky, V, 24) He was probably a half brother to Mrs. John Rice. Aaron Royce, John Royce were listed on the first census of Hampshire Co., VA (It should be noted that a warning was written on this film stating that due to boredom some of the copiers play with the spelling of names on this list.)
Sources: KY Court & Other Records by Mrs. Wm. Breckenridge Ardary, Vol I ., 1800 Tax List, Montgomery Co., KY lists Sarah DeWitt; Artie Franklin DeWitt (1877 - 1956) DeWitt Family Historian of his generation.
