Elder Creek: Lucille Lovejoy
From an Interview given by Lucille M. Lovejoy Voigts, to Rena Lynn Moore of
"The Willits News" (p. 16, Special Focus Edition, Friday, June 26, 1987):
On the day Bessie and Frank were married, Henry went along with Ceil and Charlie Lovejoy when they drove their sister and her new husband to the Longvale station to catch a train for the town of Carlotta in Humboldt County, where they made their first home.
While at the train station, a group of men who had come up from the Bay Area asked the young people where Rancho Primero was located, so the Lovejoy's volunteered to drive them there. At that time, the only road north to Laytonville was the one that went up over Strong Mountain, a steep grade that the Sears Roebuck car could not pull with its heavy load. So Ceil and Henry offered to get out and wait at the side of the road while Charlie took the visitors on to Rancho Primero, just north of Laytonville.
"There was a nice big shade tree right there beside the road, and we sat down there to wait for Charlie to come back for us. By the time he did, we were engaged, " Ceil recalls.
