During Lafayette Middleton’s early 20’s, he moved to the town of Westport on the coast to work in the sawmills where he met Laura Ella Lockhart who was to become his wife and Ruby’s mother.

Layfayette Middleton, 74, died at the hospital last week following a long illness due to age infirmities. Born in Sierra Valley in 1865, he had lived in this state all his life and for some years in Long Valley. The funeral services were held at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Roy Branscomb at Laytonville, Rev. C. L. Buckner officiating. Besides his widow he is survived by four daughters and one son: Mrs. Ruby Branscomb and Mrs. Evelyn Ferguson, both of Laytonville; Mrs. T.B. Caulfield of Ukiah and Mrs. V. N. McCloud of Rohnerville; John Middleton of Ukiah.
