Individual Details
James McCulloch Esq. of Grogan, Scotland
( - 5 Feb 1724/25)
"of Grogan" Groggan is a small village, more like a crossroads, about 4-5 miles northwest of Randalstown in Drumaull Parish, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The map of Groggan Co., Antrim shows Groggan near the left hand edge, Drummaul near the left center top, and Randalstown is the shaded town area indicating a larger town at the left of center on the bottom edge.
Another possibilty is "Gortgarn" or "Gortagharn", both townlands in County Antrrim, Randalstown district of the Upper Toome Barony. Any of these would coincide with his father's residence in the Randalstown area. There is a probate record for a James McCullock, 1725, baroney of Tome, co. Antrim, gent., which could fit this man. In addition, there is a probate record for Henry McCulloch Esq whose will was probated in Fewghoge, County Antrim in 1728. This could fit James brother, the townland of Feehogue is also in Randalstown district, Co. Antrium, Upper Toome Barony.
Notes for JAMES MCCULLOCH:
James Iredell's genealogy of the McCulloch family states: James [McCulloch] of Grogan the last mentioned of that name in the foregoing genealogy had among other children, the three following – William, James, Henry – & a Daughter married to Charles Macartney of Dublin Esq. . . . [A brother of Eleanor Macartney, wife of Rev W Francis Iredell] Charles, a Merchant in Dublin who married a Daughter of James McCulloch of Grogun Esq. . . . James McCulloch of Grogan Esq. had among many other children by a first wife, a daughter married to Henry McCulloch, a Scotsman, who had issue Alexander McCulloch of Halifax County in N. Carolina Esq -- & who is first cousin by the half blood to James [&] William McCulloch in Ireland, Wm. [Francis] Iredell, & Henry Eustace McCulloch the only surviving child of Henry McCulloch Esq, the Brother of William & James[;] & Wm MaCartney, by the whole blood. The last statement that Alexander McCulloch is a "whole blood" first cousin of William Macartney implies that William Macartney is the son of Charles Macartney (only person named as husband of a daughter of James of Grogan except for Alexander's father) and that his mother, like the mother of Alexander, must have been a daughter of James of Grogan's first wife.
