Stephen Prouty
(Abt 1764 - )
Stephen, the fourth son of Adam Prouty, was born at Spencer about 1764. He served in the Revolutionary War, enlisting in the Continental Army for 3 years. For his service, he received a bounty of the chairman of class 5, Spencer, June 25, 1782. He married at Winchendon, Mass., Dec., 9, 1787 to Elizabeth Hancock.
Stephen and Elizabeth came to Vermont about the year 1790 when their son, Luther, was 2 years old. Family tradition says that Elizabeth rode horseback carrying Luther and all their household goods were carried either on Stephen's back or on the back of the horse. Among their goods was a brass kettle which was hung on the horn of the saddle and when Elizabeth wished to rest herself while riding she would place Luther in the kettle. The couple lived a few years in Vermont until Elizabeth died. Stephen left his young son with friends and returned to Massachusetts.
The son, Luther, became the head of the family in Jericho. He married Hephzibah, daughter. of Uriah and Matilda (Graves) Howe.
