The following letter was written to the great-grandmother of Dan "Pea" Hicks from a cousin of hers. Dan thinks the end of the letter may be missing as it's not signed and doesn't know which cousin wrote it to her, or the date, though guesses maybe during the 1880s. It confuses the two Henry's which is common in many genealogies.

Dear Cousin Eliza,

You will see from the genealogical table I send that Alexander McCulloch was not the father of Margaret, our great grandmother. The table was gotten up by a descendant of Alexander McCulloch, who lives in Texas, & is a copy of that brought over he says by the McCullochs & Iredells. You will see that the daughter of James, Margaret, married Francis Iredell. James was the brother of Henry. Dr. [Heufham] is one of the state genealogists & he says he always heard that Henry McCulloch was the father of Margaret who married George Miller & the sister of Henry Eustace McCulloch. There is no doubt about his being the son of Henry & have had a number of letters in Colonial Records to prove this. Dr. [Heufham] gives the substance of what he has read there in regard to the place Henry McCulloch held there. They always write his name McCulloch. Alexander, his nephew, write McCulloch. In the Bible, Margaret's name is written McCullough, I have heard. I have ordered the McCulloch coat of arms & when I get it, I will show it to you. In [Bunke's ???] they say the name is written McCullough. There is a great deal about the family in Colonial Rec. Alexander, Henry, Henry Eustace & Benjamin, the son of Alexander. Henry was evidently a well educated & very prominent man. Held many good positions & was instrumental in bringing over many prominent Protestant families, brought over a large number from ??? & think he must have been instrumental in bringing over the Millers, Kenans, etc. Col. Records says he established the 1st Presbyterian settlement in Duplin Co. lived at Soracte as it was then called. He was on good terms with the prominent men of his day & was a much ??? man by his son Henry Eustace & will try to get additional information Dr. [Heufham] wrote the ??? of the McCullochs.
