Samuel Eddye

(Bef 15 May 1608 - 12 Nov 1687)

Samuel was born in England in 1608, the son of a non-conformist minister. He and his brother John came to America in 1630, sailing from Buxted, England, on the "Handmaiden." They landed at Plymouth that fall after 12 weeks at sea. Samuel settled at the Plymouth Colony. He was a taxpayer of Plymouth from 1632 until his death. His name occurs frequently in colony transaction until about the year 1662. He possessed several hundred acres in the eastern part of the town, extended over a portion of Halifax, and including all of the land now known as Eddyville. In 1685 he was described as of Plymouth, living in Swansea. Part of the time before his death in 1688 he lived with his son Obadiah who inherited his estate in Middleboro and Halifax (Weston 342-3).
