Asaph Prouty

(5 Mar 1793 - 4 May 1861)

Asaph was a devout member of the Congregational church and a deeply religious man. He carried a Bible with him wherever he went. In the summer of 1827 he became acquainted with the Shakers while driving home from visiting friends in the northern part of Worcester Co. He decided that was for him and he, his wife and four children, went to Shirley and joined the community. They became members November 12, 1827 (Tower 63-34). The Congregational Church wrote him a letter of admonition and later passed a vote of excommunication upon Asaph Prouty.
