Individual Details

William Hardin Hawkins

(27 Mar 1791 - 8 Aug 1851)

While I don't have positive proof as yet that William Hardin Hawkins is a son of James and Jane (Bourne) Hawkins, the following evidence supports this conclusion:
Jane Hawkins (wife of Capt. James Hawkins) left in her will "To Hardin Hawkins, one lot, one Negro Rubin at 450." All of her heirs were children or sons-in-law. Hardin is the name used by William Hardin Hawkins in all census records, etc.
William Hardin Hawkins daughter, Christina, married Hardin Hawkins, said to be her first cousin. Since Christina's husband's parents were James Morton Hawkins and Sally McMichael, this also fits that William Hardin and James Morton are brothers.
The 1860 census in Lawrenceburg, Anderson Co., KY includes on the same page:
James Morton Hawkins and his wife Sarah, Hardin Hawkins and his wife Christina (a George Baxter, 13 KY is living with them, a son of his sister, Sarah (Hawkins) Baxter), other children of James Morton Hawkins, a son of William Hardin Hawkins named Miles Hardin Hawkins married to Belsora McMichael (I do not know if she is related to Sally), and a daughter of William Hardin Hawkins, Ruth Foreman Hawkins, who is married to Peter Albert.

In Janet Claeys-Shahmiri's uncle's notes (Johnson Hawkins (aka David) deceased) he lists Hardin as a child of Captain James Hawkins. She says it is very difficult to read, but since she has been reading him for years now, she thinks he says
"Hardin born no later than 1805, there is no other basis for supporting Capt. James Hawkins had a son Hardin then the fact he shared in Jane Hawkins division of slaves in 1826. A lesser reason for thinking as is that James Morton Hawkins named a son Hardin so did his son Benjamin. Hardin if her son did not survive his mother Jane Bourne Hawkins. Jane died in 1842."
There was a Hardin Hawkins in Woodford County who may or may not have been this man."
This is transcribed by her uncle also:
"January 7, 1826, Anderson County, Kentucky
We Andrew McBrayer, James McClure and BP Settle, having met at the house of John Hackley agree to a request of the heirs of Jane Hawkins and have made the division of the said estate of Negroes as follow: (A "lot" was 2 slaves)
To William Zimmerman, lot of two, Nancy and Henry, values at 500 together.
To Hardin Hawkins, one lot, one Negro Rubin at 450.
To James Hawkins, Mariah and child Mahalie at 530.
To Joel Boston, one lot, Kitty and Marg at 525.
To John Foster, one lot, Melinda and Jams together 435.
To Thomas Jordan, one lot of two together named Amon and
Cely at 500 together
To John Hackley, one lot, Charles and child at 600.
To James Coleman, one lot, Milly and child _____ Martha.
The difference of valuation between each legate on the division was satisfied between all legatees by note on the differences between each lot.
With the exception of Mildred Brown, one of the legatees
of said estate, who has received the following Negros,
namely Nancy, Harry, Mary and child William. The valuation
of the four named Negros was $935, which is granted to her
by the legatees by her relinquishing her right to the boy Elie,
which is received by her mother Jane Hawkins.
Andrew McBrayer
James McClure"
Now with the exception of Mildred and Hardin, the others are all son-in-laws of Jane. Mildred being her daughter. She gave no slaves to her son James, so why Hardin?
Elizabeth married Edmund Foster
Lucy Ohio married James Coleman
Jane married John Hackley
Sarah (sally) married Joel Boston
Mary married Thomas Jordan
Mildred married ______ Brown
Fannie married William Zimmerman
son: James (twin of Jane) married Sally Buntain McMichael
son: Hardin ??
