Marriage

Her fathers will names her as Jane Hawkins.

James would have been around 27 to 31 depending on the wedding date used of 1779 or 1781. There are several affidavits done by Jane Hawkins, Reuben Boston and Mary Jordan that gave both years, but in later affidavits by Jane and Mary corrected to 1781 while Reuben stayed at 1779. Given the correction by the women, I think we will lean more toward 1781 as the date of marriage (Shahmiri, 2013).

We Andrew McBrayer, James McClure and BP Settle, having met at the house of John Hackley agree to a request of the heirs of Jane Hawkins and have made the division of the said estate of Negroes as follow: (A "lot" was 2 slaves)
To William Zimmerman, lot of two, Nancy and Henry, values at 500 together.
To Hardin Hawkins,one lot, one Negro Rubin at 450.
To James Hawkins, Mariah and child Mahalie at 530.
To Joel Boston, one lot, Kitty and Marg at 525.
To John Foster, one lot, Melinda and Jams together 435.
To Thomas Jordan, one lot of two together named Amon and
Cely at 500 together
To John Hackley, one lot, Charles and child at 600.
To James Coleman, one lot, Milly and child _____ Martha.
The difference of valuation between each legate on the division was satisfied between all legatees by note on the differences between each lot.
With the exception of Mildred Brown, one of the legatees
of said estate, who has received the following Negros,
namely Nancy, Harry, Mary and child William. The valuation
of the four named Negros was $935, which is granted to her
by the legatees by her relinquishing her right to the boy Elie,
which is received by her mother Jane Hawkins.
