Ahrend Gerdes Zimmerman

A. G. Zimmerman was born in Aurich, Hanover, Germany, January 7, 1831, his parents being Gerd and Enke (Hanken) Zimmerman. Gerd Zimmerman died in the fatherland, but his wife passed the last years of her life in this country, whither she had been brought by her son, A. G., who had made a special trip to the land of his birth to get her. A. G. Zimmerman had come to the United States first in 1854 and settled in Illinois. Five years later he removed to Jones county, Iowa, locating upon a farm he had purchased in Wayne township, although he had learned the trade of a shoemaker in his native land and had followed that line of work in this country for a number of years. On locating here he devoted himself exclusively to agriculture, with what result may be judged from the fact that he owned at one time five hundred and twenty acres of arable land, besides fifteen acres of timber. When he gave up the heavier duties of life and retired to Amber he divided this among his children, thereby giving them a start in life. In Amber his long life was brought to a close November 28, 1904.

A. G. Zimmerman; farmer, P.O. Monticello. Born in the Kingdom of Hanover 1831; he came to America in 1853 and to Jones Co. in 1860. His wife is Annie Grumm, also a native of the old country. They married in 1859 and had 10 children, 9 still living - Margaret, Angeline, Eliza, Garret, William, John, Sophia, Matilda, and Harmon. Mr. Zimmerman owns 240 acres of farmland. He has held the office of Road Supervisor for two terms. He and his children are Lutheran. Mr. Z is a Republican.

Death

Ahrend G Zimmerman died at his home in Amber, IA. Death resulted from stomach trouble and an enfeebled condition. He was 73 yrs old. He came to America from 2951 Strockholt, Hanover, Germany in 1854. He first settled in Dixon, IL, where he was married. Ahrend and Anna made their home in Dixon, IL for the first year of their marriage. In 1860 they traveled to Jones County in a wagon and followed his trade as a shoemaker. The first brick building in Monticello, Iowa was built by Ahrend. The first floor was the shoe repair shop and the second was the family home. Ahrend continued in shoe repairing until 1869 when he purchased some land south of Monticello. They lived on the farm until 1900, when they moved to Amber, Iowa.
Ahrend was to become one of the well-to-do citizens in Wayne township. Ahrend and Anna Zimmerman, with their daughter are buried at Wayne Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Jones County, Iowa.
It is of interest that this hard working family was among the group of fifteen families that founded the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church in Wayne Township in 1872.
