Coldwater Athlete Breaks Old Record
Allen Hoffman Hurls Javelin 176 Feet 5 5/8 Inches At Hays
At the track meet of Class A and B schools held at Hays last Saturday Coldwater placed second. Coldwater won five fifth places at Hays along with their first and second places and would have placed first in the meet if the fifth place scores had been counted.
Allen Hoffman of Coldwater broke a 16 year old Iroquois league record by hurling the javelin 178 feet, five and 5/8 inches. The Iroquois League record was 169 feet.
Edwin Carleton came from behind in a field of eight and won first in the mile run, even though he was shouldered nearly off the track by the second place man.
Earl Kopke placed first in both the high hurdles and low hurdles and Paul Guizlo placed second.

Mrs. T. R. Hackney Dies Unexpectedly


Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 6, 1962, at 2:30 p.m. in the Coldwater Methodist church for Viola Florence Hackney. Rev. Paul R. Markstrom and Rev. A. Fred Messer officiated at the services.
Mrs. Leroy Zielke, soloist, sang "Fade, Fade Each Earthly Joy" and "God Understands." She was accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Hazel McMurray.
Pallbearers were Nig Atteberry, Huron Atteberry, John Pepperd, Finis Gard, Ralph Hoofer and Ted Guss.
Honorary Pallbearers were Bert Griffith, Roy Oller, Horace Parker, Fay Wilson, Bill Bailey and Cecil Wilson.
Interment was in Crown Hill Cemetery, Coldwater, Kansas.

Obituary.
Viola Florence Vulgamore, daughter of Jessie and Sarah Vulgamore, was born August 6, 1893 at Milton, Kans., and departed this life on October 4, 1962, at the Ashland District Hospital at the age of 69 years, one month, and 29 days. She moved with her parents to Comanche county in the early 1900's, moving to Oklahoma in about 1909.
She was united in marriage March 19, 1917, to T. R. Hackney in Coldwater.
They lived on the McIntyre ranch three years, then moved to a farm nine miles south of Coldwater where they resided until they retired and moved to Coldwater in 1958.
To this union were born three daughters, Vera Marie, Margaret Lucille and Betty Joan, who died in infancy.
She was a member of the Assembly of God and served as Sunday School treasurer for a number of years.
Florence was a devoted mother and a faithful wife who always put her family first, her grandchildren were her greatest concern.
Those who preceded her in death were her parents, one daughter, two sisters and four brothers.
Survivors are her husband, T. R. of the home, one son, Elza Downer, of Muskogee, Okla,; two daughters, Vera Griffith and Lucille Haas, both of Coldwater, Kans., and Paul Guizlo of Kinsley, Kans., who made his home with the family for several years.
Six grandchildren are James and Mike Haas, Cheryl and Bill Griffith of Coldwater, Mark and Lisa Guizlo of Kinsley, Kans.
Two brothers, Jesse of Garden City, and Dewey of Livermore, Calif.

Tant R. Hackney


Funeral services were held for Tant R. Hackney at the Hatfield Funeral Home in Coldwater on Sunday, August 6, 1967, at 2:30 p.m. Rev. George F. Baugh, former Christian church minister, officiated. Mrs. Fayette Blount was the organist and Mrs. Pauline Zielke sang "God Understands" and "Fade, Fade Each Earthly Joy."
Pallbearers were Cecil Wilson, Horace Parker, Ted Guss, Bob Gilchrist, Nig Attaberry, and Eldon Hecht. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Bailey, Roy Oller, George Deewall, L. G. Whitzel, Vertis Swarmer, G. G. Haas, Harry White, and Horace Rich.
Interment was in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Tant R. Hackney, son of Anthony R. Hackney and Alice Hackney, was born November 29, 1893 at Clay Center, Kans., and departed this life August 3, 1967 in St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, at the age of 73 years, four months, and 26 days. He moved with his parents to the Lookout, Okla., community in 1903.
He was united in marriage on March 19, 1917 to Florence (Vulgamore) Downer.
They lived on the McIntyre ranch three years, then moved to a farm nine miles south of Coldwater where they resided until they retired and moved to Coldwater in 1958.
To this union were born three daughters, Vera Marie, Margaret Lucille, and Betty Jean, who died in infancy.
His wife, Florence, passed away October 4, 1962.
He was united in marriage to Sarah Frances Rader, March 19, 1964.
Tant was a kind and thoughtful husband and father and always put the welfare of his family and friends first.
Those who preceded him in death were his wife, Florence, his parents, one daughter, one sister, and two brothers.
He is survived by his wife, Frances, of the home; daughters, Vera Griffith, and husband, Ralph, Lucille Haas and husband, Jim, all of Coldwater; a stepson, Elza Downer, and wife, Alva, of Muskogee, Okla.; a foster son, Paul Guizlo, and wife, Charlean, Orange, Calif.
Six grandchildren are James Haas and wife, Sheila, and Mike Haas of Coldwater, Cherly Griffith of Denver, Colo., Bill Griffith of Coldwater, Mark and Lisa Guizlo, Orange, Calif.
Two sister, Mrs. Rose Jantzen and Mrs. Lizzie Adams of Coldwater; two brothers, Bill of Coldwater and Jack of Wichita.
