Both Sybille and John spoke German, and only John learned the English language, which he learned on his own. Barbara's mother, Maria Katherine Breuer Deuhs, was brought up in a German speaking home. She wrote and read the German script, which she said her father (John Breuer) had taught to all the children. Barbara and her older brother, Gerhard Deuhs, spoke German as children, but when they went to school, they quit speaking German at home. The Deuhs family also heard Dutch at home as Johann Joseph Franz Deuhs/Deuss was from the Netherlands. He learned the German language after he came to Long Prairie, as many of the people in the community spoke only German. He had a hardware store with harness, plumbing, etc. Long Prairie was a small dairy community of about 1800 souls in the early 1900's, but is now much larger than that. The Deuhs business was sold in late 1936.
Barbara's mother said that her family had a coat of arms, and that each child of the older generation received a silver spoon with a crest on it as an heirloom item. The Faymonville name does have a coat of arms, but I never did establish the link with Barbara's family. There is a village of Faymonville, in the the area of Waimes, Butgenbach, and Liege, Belgium.
