Jonathan Taylor

(Bef 1645 - Abt 1684)

(From research by Fletcher Freeman)
Proof of the parentage of Jonathan II may be lost in the incomplete earliest records of North Carolina. However, it looks as though he may have been a son of an earlier Jonathan Taylor I, who came among the very earliest settlers of the Albemarle region. This Jonathan seems to have been a poor man and has left us very little record. We do know that on May 1, 1668, one Richard Cragge received a grant of land on the basis of importing a number of persons into the infant colony, including Jonathan Taylor (Albemarle Co. Book of Warrents and Surveys, p. 174). This is presumably the same Jonmathan Taylor on whose estate Jeremie Symons was appointed administrator in 1684 (N.C. Secretary of State Administration Bonds). Possibly Symons had married the widow, and on Feb. 6, 1693 he proved headrights including Jonathan Taylor II (Albemarle Book of Warrents and Surveys, . 2). In April 1685 Jeremie Symons as Administrator of Jonathan Taylor obtained a caveat against the estate of Mr. William Marson for 40 shillings (N.C. Higher Court Records, 1670-96, p. 360), while in Dec. 1686 we find (Ibid, p. 375) "Whereas it hath appeared to us that Jeremy Symonds, Administrator to Jonathan Taylor deceased hath paid soe farr as the said Taylers estate amounted unto Or. therefore that the said Jeremy Symonds be discharged from his Administration."
Several other short-lived Taylors also appear in the early Perquimans vital records, at least some of whom were probably also members of this family. ( The lowlands of Albemarle Sound seem to have been a rather unhealthy place in those days, afflicted by malaria and cholera, as well as a haven for pirates). One Thomas Tailor died on Dec. 9, 1687. A John Tailer died on Feb. 2, 1688/89 at Grassy Point. A John Tailer and wife Juliana had a son Watsen Tailer born Mar, 7, 1690/91. A Julyanah Tiler (widow of the previous) married Benjamen Laker, Esqr. on May 17, 1696, Finally, a Mrs. Joannah Tayler married Capt. Jefferyes on Aug. 9, 1705.
