Deacon Thomas Mighill

(Abt 1606 - Bef 14 Jun 1654)

Deacon Thomas Mighell and his wife were members of the church in Roxbury, Massachusett as early as 1637. He was then ordained on 3 December 1639 deacon of the First Church in Rowley. He was a freeman on May 13, 1640. His wife Ellen died that same year and was buried 12 July, 1640. He then married Ann Parrat, sistor of Deacon Francis Parrat. Thomas had a three-acre house lot on Wethersfield Street in 1643. He was a selectman in 1649. It was recorded in 1650 that he had three calves and four oxen. His inventory at death amounted to 571 pounds 14s. 11d. He had nine children.

Will

His will names his wife Ann Mighill, sons Samuel, John, Thomas, Ezekiel, Nathaniel, and Stephen Mighill, and daughter Mary Mighill. He apparently had some special concern about his son John, for he stipulated that John's legacey of £17 ( to be paid in three years) was to be paid instead to his brothers Samuel and Thomas unless "his Carriage be such dureing that whole time as give satisfaction to the Rev Elders of the Church of Rowley."

WILL OF THOMAS MIGHILL.The will of Thomas Mighill of Rowleywas proved in the Ipswich court 27 : I :1655. The following copy is transcribed from the original on file in the probate office in Salem. The inventory of his estate is also given, following the will.

The laft Will & Teftament of Thomas mighill of Rowley
I Thomas mighill being fick in body but of pfect memory (bleffed be God) doe conftitute & appoint this my laft will & teftament in maner & forme as ffolloweth.
Impr I giue and bequeath my foule to God that gaue it in conifdrtable affurance of a gloryous refurrection at that day, & my body to be interred in the Comon burying place of Rowley aforefaid.
Ite my will is that all debts be firft difcharged & all neceffary expences for my decent & Comely buryall.
Ite I give to my loueing wife Ann mighill one hundred and ten pounds.
Ite I giue to my Son Samuell mighill feauenty pounds to be paid vnto him within one halfe yeare after the date hereof.
Ite I giue to John mighill eighteene pounds part wherof my will is shall be paid vnto him out of my inheritance at the place Comonly called the Villge, the reft of it wthin one yeare, & feauenteene pounds more three yeares after the day of the date hereof: Prouided his Carriage be fuch dureing that whole time as giue fatiffaction to the Revd Elders of this Church of Rowley mr Ezekiell Rogers mr Samuell Philips mr Humfrey Reyner mathew Boyes maxmilian Jewet & ffrancis Parrot or the furuiueing of them.
Ite I giue to my Son Thomas mighill thirty pounds & a young black mare that comes three yeares old to be paid into my Son Samuells hand wthin two yeares after my death & my will is that it be expended on him towards his bringing up in learning,or otherwise if the abouefaid Elders & brethren Judge meete. And my Will ffurther is concer[n] ing my aboufaid Son John mighill that if his Courfe and caryage be fuch at the end of the abouefaid three yeares that the aforefaid Elders Sr Brethrendoe not Judge meete that he fhould haue the faid feauenteene pounds aboue faid that then it fhall be equally diuided betwixt my two Sons Samuell & Thomas mighill & my will further concerning the Legacy bequeathed to my Son Thomas mighill is that vpon payment of it into my Son Samuells hand as abouefaid his acquittance fhall be a full difcharge to my Executour & in cafe my faid fon Thomas dy before he haue fully completed the age of twenty one yeares his portio fhall fall halfe of it to my Son Samuell & the other halie of it to my Son Samuellor John as the aforefaid Reuerend Elders & Brethren or the furuiueing of them shall Judge meete.
Ite I giue to my Son Ezekiell mighill thirty fiue pounds.
Ite I giue & bequeath to my Son nathaniell mighill thirty fiue pounds.
Ite I giue to my Son Stephen mighill thirty fiue pounds we" three faid laft Legacyes my will is fhall be paid vnto my three faid laft ions when they fnall be twenty one yeares of age.
Ite I giue to my daughter mary mighill thirty fiue pounds to be paid to her at the age of twenty one yeares or at the day of her maryage wch of them fhall first be & in cafe my wife be wt" Child I bequeath thirty fiue pounds to it And in cafe any of the laft mentioned foure or fiue Children dy before the age of twentyone yeares my will is that their portion or portions fhall be equally diuided amongft the reft of them; faue only that in Cafe my faid daughter mary fhall mary &. after dy before the age of twenty one yeares my will is not that if be repaid againe. And in case my wife defire my will is that thefe laft Legacyes bequeathed to my younger Children wch I had by her be fet out for them & fhee my faid wife to haue the benefitt of them for their education till the age of twenty one years.
Ite I giue to my fifter Ann Tenny one pound.
Ite to ffaith Parrot Senior one pound.
