He had been found by Thomas Leaver smoking tobacco near a dung hill full of hay and straw between Widow Mighell's house and barn on a dry windy day before the snow fell in the beginning of last winter. Though admonished by Thomas Leaver, he was still smoking when Thomas returned. John Pearson also testified that he saw a pipe in Mighell's mouth.
John married the next year on July 6 1659 to Sarah Batt. He was one of six men in 1661 allowed to build a pen to catch wolves for three years and receive 50s for each wolf taken. Other town records show John selling property and keeping cows for the town. For some time John lived at "Oyster River" in Dover, N.H. and was constable there in 1674. Three of his children were baptized in Newbury, MA on Aug 13, 1676 were he and his wife were living at the time.
By 1681, John and his sons, John and Thomas were in Suffield, Conn. were they received land grants. They were among the early grants to settlers or proprietors between 1670 and 1682. On March 9, 1681/82 John Mighell, Sr. was listed in Suffield as privileged to vote in town affairs. He was selectman from 1686 to 1690, and in 1697 served on a committee to clear five acres of meadow land for the minister. He died in Suffield in 1702.
