Individual Details

Mary Williams

(Abt 1774 - )

**The source of my information that she was Mary Williams was an older Garrison researcher who is now deceased. Unfortunately, he did not provide sources for all of his information. This is from his book: "The Williams-Garrisons intermarriages of Jedediah and Jane; Salesberry and Mary; and likely Isaiah and Tryphenia" That would be Jedediah Garrison and Jane Williams, Salesberry Garrison and Mary Williams, and Isaiah Garrison and Tryphenia Williams but I think his argument was weak about Tryphenia Williams. Mrs. Mary Garrison (related to William Henry Harrison)

In the 1830 & 1840 census John Jones is living next door to Merry Webb.... and living with John in each case is an elderly woman some 20 years older than his wife. Norman Warnell told Winnie Whitaker that he found in Edmonson Co .. Winnie thinks he said it was in the old equity files, where John Jones was paid by the county for the yearly care of a Mrs. Webb and Norman could never figure out who it might have been. Winnie believes it might be Mary Garrison Webb who was living with Eleanor and John. She was the same age as Merry who was next door. They lived next to each other in 1830 but by 1840 one or the other had moved. She will have to look and compare neighbors for 1840 to see who moved and believes Merry left Mary Garrison and married Mary Davis.

Mary may have married a Harrison before she married Merry Webb. If she did not, it would be really unusual for a woman of that time with young children to stay single. If so, it would be my guess that she married a brother of Carter Harrison as these Webb Harrison and Garrison families are so entwined. Have you ever heard of Jones Garrison? because of the name I had wondered if Mary might have been connected to the Jones family somehow? Merry had a sister Nancy who married Philip Jones...The Jones were living near the Saluda River with Martin Webb and before that we found them in Washington Co Tn just before 1780 ... they left there until about 1784 when they return to Wilkes Co NC. (Whittaker)

We do have a connection in Wilkes Co to the Williams family..if I remember correctly one of Martin's nieces - the daughter of John Webb - married into the Williams family. I later find this George Williams in Tn with Carter Harrison and Merry Webb...uncle of my Merry Webb here in Ky. Do you know who Mary Williams family was? I notice you mention that some of the Garrison family moved to Illinois... the daughter of Mary Garrison - Eleanor, who married John Jones moved with her family to Ill in the 1840's I think. You mentioned Grayson County Ky.....I am not sure if you know that Grayson Co is directly across the river from Edmonson. We find a lot of the Edmonson Co families in the Grayson Co Census in 1810 before Hart Co was formed in 1812 and as Edmonson was not formed until 1825. I live in Grayson Co KY...a few miles from where these families all settled. The farms were in an area near the Green and Nolin Rivers.. I was born on Nolin. (Whittaker)
