Perhaps the most highly esteemed and useful preacher ever raised up in Holly Springs Baptist Church in Edmundson Co. Kentucky was Rev. John Jones, son of Phillip and Nancy Webb Jones. John Jones, the 4th son, was born in Pendleton (now Pickens) County South Carolina on 10 December 1790 and came to Kentucky with his parents. As a young man he spent a short time near Edwardsville, Illinois during Indian troubles. He returned home and married Eleanor Garrison, 30 January 1813. They united with the Holly Springs Baptist Church that soon ordained him to preach the gospel. He was a very stout man and preached all over that portion of the country: frequently working on his farm five days of the week and preaching as many as nine sermons in the remaining two days. He pastored Holly Springs for a considerable time, in addition to Beaver Dam at Rhoda, and Beaver Dam in Grayson County (now known as Leitchfield First Baptist Church). It is not known how many he baptized but the number ran into the hundred, perhaps thousands. Among those was his own father, age 60, who had previously been a Methodist. Rev. or Elder, as preachers were called in those days, John Jones was an uneducated man of natural ability and firmness, a strong advocate to total abstinence from intoxicating drink, a Whig and a republican, and always opposed to human slavery. Due to his outspoken manner, he was admired but not always liked. He was active in both the Green River Association and the Liberty Association. On 20 August 1842, Elder John Jones delivered the introductory sermon before the Liberty Baptist Association at the Glasgow Baptist Church, Glasgow, Ky. His sermon was based on Mark 13:34. Seated in the congregation were such men as Elder James Locke (son of Elder Jacob Locke), Elder J. M. Pendleton, Richard Garnett and others. About 1850 a number of families moved from this area to Warren County, Illinois. Rev. Jones and almost all of the families of his seven brothers and sisters were involved in this move; the reason for moving is not known. He continued his preaching until his death 16 May 1862. He was a strong lunged man but died of inflammation of the lungs. Soon after his death almost all of the Jones families moved to Union county, Iowa where his wife, Eleanor, died 06 September 1882. John and Eleanor Garrison Jones had nine children, most of whom moved first to Illinois and then to Iowa. They were Martin W. Jones who married Rosana Lindsey, 21 Jan 1836; Emily Jones who married William Morris; Veachel H. Jones who married Sarah Ann Gardner 22 Sept. 1846; Willis Jones who married Margaret E. Ray, 26 Sept. 1843; Mary Jones who married Edward Elmore, 05 March 1847; Sarah M. Jones who married Joel M. Franklin, 17 Jan. 1850; John H. Jones who married Lucy B. Bliss; Paradine Jones (unmarried); and Eliza A. Jones who married Fred Brice." (from The Barrens... by Emery White)

On motion of John Jones, it is ordered that license to celebrate the rites of matrimony be granted unto him, having into bond in penalty of 500 pounds with John Dicus, Philip F. Jones and Martin H. Webb, his securities conditioned as the law directs, and also taken the oath of allegiance to this commonwealth. - Edmonson Co., KY Orders Book I, Jul 1825

Connelley's 1922 History of Kentucky describes Samuel Edwin Jones ancestry and says of his grandfather; Rev. John Jones, a native of South Carolina, who died in Illinois. He was a minister of the Baptist Church and a pioneer clergyman in what is now Edmondson County, Kentucky, to which region he came about the close of the eighteenth centuryand remained there until in the late '50's, when he went to Illinois. He married Eleanor Garrison, a native of North Carolina, who died in Iowa. The Jones family came to the American Colonies from Wales, first locating at Greenwood, South Carolina, from whence migration was made to North Carolina and then to Kentucky (543).
