Elisha Alderman

(23 Dec 1744 - 1832)

Elisha was from Simsbury, Connecticut. His first wife, Sarah Barnes, was from the neighboring county of New Haven. For unknown reasons this marriage did not last. It's said that they had three sons but information on them is missing, assumedly because of his separation from Sarah. Letters written to M.P. Alderman, Gloucester, MA in 1889 said that the three sons of Elisha and Sarah were brought up by their maternal grandmother and that they did not recognize the Ohio branch of the family. Another letter to M.P. Alderman in 1889 from E.W. (Elisha Wesley) Alderman, Leavaca, Cherry Co., NE, said that his grandfather (Elisha Alderman) had two brothers, Ephraim & Stephen and his father ( Elisha Alderman, Jr.) had a half brother, John Alderman (Spear,19).
Elisha married Thankful Huff, a woman of Welsh descent, after his separation with his first wife. The birth date of Mary, in March of 1777, is earlier than the date given for the second marriage. Whether that had a bearing on the failed first marriage is speculation as I don't know how early they separated, or the obstacles to remarriage at that time.
It is thought by some that Elisha and Thankful lived in or near Philadelphia, Pa. for some years. But by 1790 they resided in Mohawk Town, Montgomery County, New York, where the census shows a family consisting of two boys under sixteen and three girls besides himself and his wife. Next, it's known they resided in Wayne Twp., Steuben Co., New York, as this is the locality Elisha and other family members are said to have come from when they became settlers at Caneadea.
In 1803 Elisha came to Caneadea in Allegany Co., New York; country along the banks of the Genesee River explored the previous year by Ephraim Sanford and Zephaniah Huff (History of Allegany Co., 231). Other settlers from Wayne in Steuben Co. that also came included his daughter Mary and her husband Job Phillips, his daughter Esther and her husband James Smith, Stephen Vandermark and his daughter Maria who later that year married his son Elisha Jr. They eventually made their home in the Genesee Valley in western New York were they resided for many years. The Genesse Valley is a region between Lake Seneca and Lake Erie through which runs the Genesee River. The river flows northward through western New York from its source south of the town of Genesee in Pennsylvania and empties into Lake Ontario. The eastern bank was the west boundary of the Iroquois, and the valley along the stream was the beloved Zon-esche-o in their tongue, or "beautiful valley." As pronounced by certain tribes, "Gen-nes-see" became the name of a district famed for its beauty and fertility.
Elisha Alderman's family was at Caneadea from at least June 1803 to Jan 1810. The Settler's index of Holland Land Co. Records shows entries "1803 Je 23: Book R1 T5 p 8, Allegany Co., Town of Caneadea, Elisha Alderman, cash to Ephraim Sanford, agent." "1804 S 21: Book R1 T5 p 21, Elisha Alderman, cash. Again, cash on Jy 5, 1809 to Sanford, and again cash to Eli Griffith, Jr D 22, 1810.
Still not satisfied, in 1808 Elisha's son, Elisha Jr., and his son-in-law, Job Phillips, went down the Ohio River as forerunners in search of a desirable place for the establishment of a home in the then new state of Ohio which had been admitted to the Union five years previously. They returned with favorable reports and it was then, perhaps, that Elisha and his family left the Genessee Valley and settled at Olean, a town immediately north of the Pennsylvania border (now in Cattaraugus County, New York). There they began the construction of a raft large enough to carry all their belongings and to house twenty people. They were fully prepared to take advantage of the spring freshets and in April of 1810 they made the trip down the Ohio and settled near the site of the present city of Marietta, Ohio.
Seventeen people made the trip, all sons, daughters, and sons-in-law of Elisha Senior; Elisha Alderman (68) & wife (Thankful Huff), Job Phillips & Wife (Mary Alderman, 33), John Stewart & wife (Ann Alderman abt 30), James Ward Smith & wife (Esther Alderman 28), Elisha Jr (27) & wife (Maria Vandermark), Rachel (abt 25), Elijah (22), Hosea (19), Elihu (18), Lucy (14), and Anna (9). They floated down the Allegheny River to Pittsburgh, upon a lumber raft loaded with household effects and families, and then via the Ohio River to Marietta, a nearly 500 mile voyage through uninhabited country. Once there they traded the lumber in the rafts for 640 acres in Homer twp., ten miles farther west of Marietta (History of Morgan Co. by Robertson 1886) There he and his wife spent the remainder of their lives. Elisha and Thankful were buried on the farm of their son, Elisha, Jr. The old family cemetery with many stones bearing Alderman names is still maintained by the township trustees at Bartlett, Ohio.

The 1810 tax list for Athens Co., Ohio shows Elijah Alderman, Elisha Alderman, and Elisha Alderman Jr.
The 1816 tax list for Athens Co., Ohio shows Elisha Alderman, and Elijah Alderman

An Elisha Alderman was a customer at the Merritt store ca. 1771, most likely this man. A James Barnes was also a customer at the Merritt store about this time. Benedict Sweet and Samuel Baldwin charged to his account. [DCSB II B:139, 217].

Ontario Co formed 1789, Genesee Co formed 1802 from Ontario Co., Allegany County formed 1806 from Genesee Co. So the Alderman's could have lived in the same place and that place have 3 dif names-- from 1783 to 1808 or 1810.
Utica, NY was starting point of Genesee Road which state constructed west to Genesee Country--probably 1800?--It's possible the Aldermans and James Ward Smith went to Genesee Co by Mohawk Valley or River. The mouth of the Mohawk is the spot where the Mohawk flows into the Hudson River. (Watervliet now) And Schenectady is about 20 mi from Watervliet.
