Death

Raymond Poppe age 82, of Monticello, died Thursday evening, March 3, 2011 at Jones Regional Hospital, Anamosa following and extended illness.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 Monday morning, March 7, 2011 at the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, rural Monticello with interment in the Wayne Zion Cemetery. Rev. Robert Wessels will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 4 until 7 Sunday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello. Surviving is his sister-in-law, Ruth Harms, Monticello, nephew, John (Kathy) Harms, both of Monticello, 2 nieces Jenny (Pat) Lambert, Monticello, Brenda (Mick) Crumpton, Manchester, and a special cousin, Marla (Nick) Paulsen, Center Junction and their families. He was preceded in death by his Parents, his wife Evalena on February 21, 2007 and 2 brothers in law, Marvin and Willis Harms.
Raymond John Poppe was born June 20, 1928 in Wayne Township, Jones County, Iowa. He was the son of Fred H. and Katherine Ricklefs, Poppe. Ray attended Wayne Township #3. He then started farming with his parents. Raymond J. Poppe and Evalena M. Harms were married October 3, 1948 at the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in Wayne Township. Ray operated Poppe Seed Company and was a DeKalb Seed Corn Dealer for many years. He also operated Poppe Clerking Service working with local auctioneers at sales and was certifying inspector for the A.S.C.S. office. He was an avid Hawkeye fan. Ray enjoyed bowling on the Jakes Standard Team and was a member of the Monticello Golf Club for many years. He was a charter member of the Jones County Driftbusters Snowmobile Club. He also loved to play bridge and euchre.
Ray was a life long member of the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. He was baptized on July 10, 1928 and confirmed his faith on May 24, 1942. Ray held many church offices over the years. He was the Treasurer of the Congregation, served on the Memorial Board and was the Wayne Zion Cemetery Sexton for many years. He was also active in the Monticello Community serving on the Park Board, the Senior Housing Board and the Jones County Fair Board.
