Death

Evalena M. Poppe, age 77, of Monticello, died Wednesday morning, February 21, 2007 at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness.
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 Saturday morning, February 24, 2007 at the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, rural Monticello with interment in the Wayne Zion Cemetery. Rev. DuWayne Dalen will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 4 until 8 Friday at the Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello. Surviving is her husband Ray, a sister-in-law, Ruth Harms and nephew, John (Kathy) Harms, both of Monticello, 2 nieces Jenny ( Pat ) Lambert, Monticello, Brenda (Mick) Crumpton, Manchester, and a special cousin, Marla (Nick) Paulsen, Center Junction. She was preceded in death by her Parents, 2 brothers, Marvin and Willis.
Evalena Marie Harms was born September 24, 1929 in Wayne Township, Jones County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Carl H. and Mary G. Lurkens, Harms. Evalena attended Wayne Township School #3 and graduated from the Monticello Community Schools with the Class of 1948.
Evalena M. Harms and Raymond J. Poppe were married October 3, 1948 at the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in Wayne Township. Evalena had worked at the canning factory in Monticello. She was best known for her fresh egg route that she had while they farmed. She had over 60 customers and to most of those customers, she delivered eggs to their door if not their refrigerator.
Evalena was a life long member of Wayne Zion Lutheran Church. She was baptized on September 30, 1929 and confirmed her faith on April 25, 1943. She had served on many committees the last one being the Memorial Board. She was also and avid golfer, bowler and bridge club member, and was a charter member of the Monticello Drift Busters Club.
