John Lovejoy

"John Lovejoy was apprenticed as a goldsmith as a youth, after he had been taken to London by his widowed mother. He first prospered after he had learned this trade but probably died poor in as much as his widow was buried as a servant. The only alternative supposition is that this Cicely Lovejoy may have been a different person and a servant of Thomas Lovejoy.
There are several records about John Lovejoy. On Nov. 5, 1593, he "bargained and sold to William Martin, of the same parish in London a messuage or tenement with a croft adjoining containing twelve acres and situated in Hendon, Middlesex." On Feb. 19, 1595, John Lovejoy with the consent of his wife, Cecelia, "gave an assignation to Ralph Grafton to a bond for eighteen pounds sterling granted to him." On Sept, 9, 1595 "There is a recognizance of John Lovejoy, goldsmith, citizen of London, to Thomas Bromall, citizen and fish-monger, in the sum of one hundred pounds, the condition being that said Lovejoy, his heirs, etc., shall observe, perform, etc. the Covenants, Grants etc. comprised in an Indenture between him, said Lovejoy, and the said Thomas Bromall, dated 23 August." On Nov. 3, 1604, (some confusion here because date would seem to be after John's death?) there is an indenture "between Walter Grafton, citizen and goldsmith of London, son of Ralph Grafton, late of London, and John Lovejoy, for the dale to said Lovejoy, in consideration of sixty-three pounds of all that messuage or tenements, etc. now in possession of said Walter Grafton, situated in hallway, Middlesex.""
