Ihnke Albert Heiken

(13 Feb 1871 - 14 Apr 1944)

Al Heiken writes -
Ihnke Albert (used either Albert or I.A.) lived his entire life in Jones Co., Iowa. He was raised on a farm, and continued farming as his career. His schooling was whatever he gained from local schools and at home. He and his wife Elise farmed the land he obtained from his father on 4 Feb. 1910, the NW 1/4 of Section 21, plus 8 acres added to the SW corner for a total of 168 acres. He farmed 39 years (Animals & Crops) and retired in 1936.
I never really got to know my grandfather, as he never paid much attention to any of his grandchildren. He wasn't in good health most of the time from a back injury due to a tree falling on him while they were cutting firewood. I don't know the details of the accident, but I believe that they didn't seek proper medical treatment for him at the time of the accident. He remained sort of hunch-backed the rest of his life.
Upon retirement, Ihnke Albert and Elise moved to 331 E. Third Street, in Monticello. Their daughters, Caroline and Emma, boarded with them. I.A. died at home, 2:30 am, on 14 April, 1944 at the age of 73. Their farm was taken over by their son, Harvey. After Harvey left farming and moved to California, it was rented out, and after several years, sold.
His wife Elise stayed in their house in town. I used to stay with grandmother during high school when it snowed too much to drive home after school or if Dad thought it would snow too much that night for me to drive back to high school the next morning. Elise lived on until 7 June 1959, when she passed away at the age of 79, in the Brandt Nursing Home, Wyoming, Iowa. She and her husband are buried in the Oakwood Cemetery.
