Individual Details

Elaine Irene Eilers

(10 Jul 1911 - 3 Jan 1994)

Elaine Irene Eilers was born July 10, 1911 on her parents farm in Lovell Township, Jones County, Iowa. Elaine was the daughter of Henry E. Eilers and Mary Peters. She was the youngest of nine children. Elaine became an aunt at birth, as her oldest sister Blanche had her first child shortly before her birth. She attended public schools and graduated from Monticello Public High School in 1930. The only story that I heard about her was when she was learning to drive the car. It's told that as she drove into the farmyard, she turned to wave at her mother and ran into a tree.

When Jane Heiken Lloyd sent me three of Elaine's china tea cups, I asked to know more about my grandmother. Aunt Jane wrote:
Happy to hear the cups arrived safely.
My mother only made Earl Grey English Breakfast - that was her favorite. She had me over in the afternoon for tea and homemade cookies any day I was not working.
She liked buying pretty tea cups on trips and purchased some in Canada. I gave her cups for her birthday sometimes.
She was very social and she enjoyed playing cards. She had many friends and she was very generous with the bread she made and things she grew and raised on the farm. When relatives and friends visited they usually went home with eggs, butter, strawberries (if in season) and maybe a pkg of frozen bacon.
Glad you enjoyed receiving the tea cups and hope you think of her when you use them.

Love, Jane
