Individual Details

Elizabeth Garrison

(Abt 1771 - Aft 1822)

Elizabeth Garrason married Joseph Merrill in Duplin County 1 Apr 1791. [Cora Bass. Marriage Bonds of Duplin County, North Carolina 1749-1868. Clinton (NC): Bass Publishing Co., 1959. p73.] Because she had a child between 1791 and 1795 it is likely she was born about 1771.

Joseph Merrill's will, recorded in 1795 in Duplin County, mentioned his wife Elizabeth and one child, a son, William Merrill. Joseph designated his brother-in-law, Thomas Garrison, as his executor. ["Duplin County, North Carolina Will Book A", p307.] This was undoubtedly the Thomas Garrason born 1764 whose name appears again and again in the records of Duplin.

Sometime after Joseph's death, Elizabeth moved to Effingham County, GA. The censuses for 1800 and 1810 for Georgia were destroyed when the British burned Washington, DC during the War of 1812. But those of 1820 (p. 81) and 1830 (p.110) show two adult females in the home of Darius Garrason. One, of course, was his wife. The other is thought to have been Elizabeth (Garrason) Merrill because there were no Merrill households listed. She surely was in that county in 1822 when the following deed was made. It was recorded in Duplin County in 1824.

4 Dec 1822. Elizabeth Merrill of Effingham County, Georgia sold to Thomas Garrason of Duplin County, North Carolina, for $100.00, a tract of 100 acres lying on the east side of the North East River in Duplin County. ["Duplin County, North Carolina, Deed Book 8A", p. 298.]

It is not known what happened to Elizabeth, whether she died before Darius and his family moved to old Alachua County, FL, or whether she went with them. She is one of the three persons who definitely belong to the New Family Group discussed elsewhere.
