Joseph came from Wales to America and settled on Edisto Island in 1748.

"William Lawton settled on Edisto Island 1745."

"Now it is said that 3 brothers came from Eng., namely William, James, and one brother went north, and I think that I have found him if that was him. Jeremiah Lawton and his 6 descendent is Major Kirk B. Lawton of Ahtol, Mass. ..."

At death was cultivating 660 acres of rice, indigo, peas, corn, etc., with 36 slaves. Estate appraised at 7,900 Enlish pounds Sterling.


Captain Edisto Island Company of Foot, St. John's Colleton 24 May 1757, planter of 640 acres. A "Sober, Discrete and Substantial" man born about 1705 of the Cheshire England family, married three times and died here between 9 Oct. and 15 Oct. 1757.

William was a Lieutenant and later Captain of the Edisto Island Company of the Colleton County Regiment of Foot in 1757. Trustee of the Edisto Presbyterian Church in 1755. Overseer of the poor for St. John's Anglican Parish in 1750.
