In memory of Susan Smith/Daughter of John R. & Eliza Mathewes/who died/October the 23rd 1830/ Aged 16 years/ This marble is placed here by/ afflicted Parents, to mark/ the spot which holds all that remains of a dearly/loved Child. Her best Eulogy is that those/who knew her loved her./ Those who loved her not, never knew her./ I saw a flower budding forth/ I saw it rear and bloom./ Then leaf by leaf, it fell to earth/ And left its stem in gloom./ E-/
