Death of Mrs. John D. Poppe.
Mrs. Catherine Margaret Poppe, the wife of John D. Poppe, of this city, died, last Friday morning. Four weeks previous to her death she was called to Kansas, on account of the fatal illness of her brother. While she was away from home she complained of a pain in her foot. She consulted a doctor and learned that it was afflicted with blood-poisoning. She immediately returned home, and her foot became worse. Gangrene set in and her condition became grave. A few days after her return she was compelled to take to her bed, and then it developed that she was also afflicted with diabetes. The seriousness of the latter disease became so great that an operation was impossible on her foot.
Mrs. Poppe was born on the 11th of December, 1852, at Manx, Germany. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerd Paegler and lived with her parents in her native country until the year 1870, when she emigrated with them to America. They located n Wayne township. While a resident of Germany she attended school at Sedal, and later was confirmed in the Lutheran church, to which faith she remained true until her death.
She was united in marriage to John D. Poppe on March 17, 1872. Mr. and Mrs. Poppe removed to Castle Grove, where they lived until two years ago, when they came to Monticello. There was born to them seven children, one of whom, a son, died some years ago. The other children are Mrs. Henry Ahrnken, Mrs. Lawrence Jacobs, Mrs. J. B. Zimmerman, Mrs. Alfred Laude, Mrs. Gerd Gerdes and Miss Helen Poppe. She is also survived by her husband and two brothers and two sisters. The funeral services were held at the German Lutheran church, last Monday afternoon, and interment was made at Oakwood cemetery. Rev. S. Ide, the pastor of the Lutheran church, conducted the services. Mrs. Poppe was adored by her husband and daughters, for she had always been a kind and attentive wife and mother, with her highest interests in this life centered about the home. What better things can be said of a woman, that her husband and children call her blessed, and her neighbors praise her daily life?
