John D. Poppe Called By Death Last Friday Eve.

He Had Been a Resident of Jones County During the Past 61 Years.

Death called John D. Poppe to his last rest, last Friday afternoon, at 6 o'clock. Mr. Poppe had suffered a partial stroke of paralysis a few years ago, and this condition gradually undermined his health. He was of an ambitious nature, and was ever determined not to give up to his infirmities. Even a short time before he was compelled to remain in his home, he was able to walk to the post office. He was a man who always had a jovial nature, and as a result possessed many friends who will be pained to learn of his passing.
He was a son of the late Frederick and Johanna Poppe, and was born In Reepsholt, Germany, May 22, 1850. He was confirmed In the Evangelical Lutheran church in the town of his birth, April 23, 1865 When a young man of eighteen years, he had the ambition to see something of the new world, and therefore emigrated to the United States. He settled in Wayne township, and worked upon various farms until his marriage, when he rented a farm to operate for himself.
The marriage of Mr. Poppe to Catherine Paegler occurred March 17, 1872. Mr. and Mrs. Poppe re moved to Castle Grove township, where they lived until 1913, when they came to Monticello and purchased a home which Is now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lux. Following Mrs. Poppe's death, July 7, 1915, Mr. Poppe continued to live in the home until he sold it and purchased a home on Angle street, in which he continued to live until his death.
There were seven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Poppe, two of whom preceded their father in death; George, who died in 1902, at the age of 22 years, and Helen, the wife of Rev. Ewald Senst, who died at Maquoketa, October 31, 1928. The surviving children are Mrs. Henry Ahrnken and Mrs. J. B. Zimmerman of Monticello; Mrs. Lawrence Jacobs of Emmetsburg; Mrs. Alfred Laud and Mrs. G. H. Gerdes of Castle Grove township. Mr. Poppe is also survived by one brother, Henry Poppe, of Cass township, and by nine grandchildren. All of his children were present at the funeral.
Short funeral services were held at Mr. Poppe's home last Tuesday morning at 10:15, and thereafter other services were held at St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran church, at which denomination Mr. Poppe was a lifelong member. The Rev. Henry L. Adix, pastor of St. Matthew's church, at which denomination Mr. Poppe was a lifelong member. The Rev. Henry L. Adix, pastor of St. Matthew's church, conducted the services assisted by Rev. C. Mardorf, former pastor of Zion's Lutheran church in Wayne township. The services were conducted in both the English and German languages; Rev. Adix had charge of the English portion, and Rev. Mardorf, the German portion. Mr. Poppe's body was laid to rest in Oakwood cemetery.
He was a man who was beloved by his family, and was always kind and attentive to them. His highest interest centered about his home. What better things can be said of a man than his family and neighbors had nothing but praise for his daily life?
