Between the 1850 census and the 1860 Mary's recorded age increased by only 8 years. Also, if she was 38 in 1860 that would mean she was only 12 years old when her first child, William, was born. So, I am assuming that the second census is in error... maybe she took to lying about her age, not wanting to admit that she was 40.
