According to Pauline's notes, the 1860 census (Reynolds County) showed a 6 year old female named "Aletta", the 1870 census showed a 16 year old male named Thomas, and the 1880 census shows a 26 year old named "Thomas Atlas" (in a separate household). M.A. McDowell had Aletta and Atlas down as being the same person. Dorothy Swearigim seems to have agreed. M.A. shows that he moved to Arkansas.
