Individual Details

Zachariah "Zack" Miller

(1834 - Abt 1866)

Reportedly killed by bushwhackers on farm on Mill Creek east of Lesterville, Missouri. Although the war ended in 1865, some of the bushwackers, including Jesse James, continued to operate. The famous Clint Eastwood movie, The Outlaw Josey Wales, is a fictional depiction of one such bushwacker.

I could not find Zachariah on the 1850 census in the household of Joseph Miller. I did find him in the 1860 census in Wright County living in the household of a Brice M. Smart, but it says he was born in Indiana, not Missouri. However, I think that makes sense, because William and Ira were evidently born in Indiana. I think it is the 1860 census that is wrong. Mr. Smart was also from Indiana. I think they probably knew this Smart family, perhaps they were relatives, and Zack went to work for Mr. Smart on his farm when he turned 16.

I also found a Zachariah in Ozark County who was born in Iowa. However, he does show up as the head of his own household two households down from Joseph on the 1870 census.

Pauline Bonney's notes show Zack and Dicey married in 1859, but her sister Dorothy showed 1851. I think the 1851 date must be a mis-print, because that would make Dicy just 10 years old at the time of her marriage. Also, Pauline showed Zack died in 1863, but Dorothy had 1866. Since they apparently had a daughter born in 1865, that would rule out 1863. However, Pauline put a question mark next to this last daughter.
